Before Your Travel

We recommend visiting the American Veterinary Medical Association before traveling with your pet, this article with help answer any questions you may have prior to traveling.

If you plan to travel by auto or air with your pet to another state or internationally, your pet may require a certificate of veterinary inspection. A health certificate is a federal document generated by a federally-accredited veterinarian. The certificate ensures that a pet has met certain health criteria. There are two general types of health certificates for pets: domestic for interstate travel within the U.S. (usually by air) and international. Both types have stringent rules veterinarians cannot bend.

Domestic Health Certificates

If you plan to travel by auto or air with your pet to another state or internationally, your pet may require a certificate of veterinary inspection. A health certificate is a federal document generated by a federally-accredited veterinarian. The certificate ensures that a pet has met certain health criteria. There are two general types of health certificates for pets: domestic for interstate travel within the U.S. (usually by air) and international. Both types have stringent rules veterinarians cannot bend.

Some common requirements for pets traveling to other states include a current rabies vaccination and testing negative for heartworm or currently on a heartworm preventative. Requirements vary from state-to-state. Domestic health certificates must be written the same day the veterinarian completes a thorough physical exam and cannot back-dated. Check with your airlines and the states you’re driving through to see if they require one (each is different).

International Health Certificates

International health certificates vary by country, can be quite complicated, and often take several months to complete. As soon as you know your travel details, contact Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital in Anthem, AZ, to assist you with the pet travel process. We will help you determine the destination country’s requirements, including any needed vaccinations, tests, and/or treatments.

Call us at 801.254.4840 and be sure to provide the following information:

• The type of animal that will be traveling
• The country of destination
• The date of departure from the U.S.
• Whether your pet will be traveling alone, as cargo, or with a person in the cabin of the plane

Some countries require you to meet time frames for updating your pet’s vaccinations, diagnostic testing, or administration of treatments and/or medications, so start the process EARLY! If your pet is eligible for a health certificate we will issue it within the validity period (the time-frame for which the certificate can be used for your pet to travel) set by your destination country.

“These guys are seriously amazing. We started to take our pets here 6 months ago. We’ve taken our dog in twice and both times it’s been a good experience. The vet is amazing and very caring. Then last weekend we unfortunately had to put our cat. The whole team was so sincere and caring. They let us stay with our cat for as long as we needed to say goodbye. Then today we received a condolence letter from Stone Ridge that was signed by everyone on the team. It was so sweet. They really go the extra mile. Can’t recommend them enough.”

Emmalee Anderson

“They do a great job. We take our 3 dog and cat here. Been doing so for years now, and trust that they give the best attention to our pets. They are very busy, so we set an appointment each time for our next visit. Grooming is great as well.”

Roger Kemp

“They always have the best interest of my animals and are wanting to help the animal. They know what they are doing. They do not try to make as much money as they can. I do not feel that I over pay for their services thank you for giving my animals the best care. From goats to dogs.”

Julie Hougaard

“I took my dog there do to emergency and they got him right in. Took wonderful care of him. The cost was over $300 less than another vet. The staff was awesome I’m so glad I ended up there, I now have a new vet.”
